Strings for a pick player?

Sign in to disble this ad
after 5 pages I didn't see my answere so here goes the question.

I play with a pick (dunlop 1mm) and I have a heavy hand when i pick mainly because of the speed that I play. I have Ernie ball hybrids on my Traben right now but they raddle like hell. so I want to go to a thicker gage maybe. (I'm also thinking it might have to do with nut problems since I wrapped tape around the strings at the nut and they stopped rattling).

What would be some suggestions on good strings for a heavy, fast pick player.

I used D'Addero(sp) when I first started playing on my old Peavey foundation but I changed to the Ernie balls when I bought theTraben. if that helps anything.

When I played mostly with a pick I used D'addario XLs
Hex core makes them a bit stiffer, but sounds like you will probably need to raise the action at the bridge and add a bit of relief.....that was my experience with heavy handed pick playing.

I've played with a pick 99.9% of the time for the past 3 decades. Didnt take long to learn that haveing a light touch makes fast playing easier and more precise. Speed doesnt require heavy picking. As to string rattle, depends how bad it is. A little fret buzz is to be expected with very low action. So long as note decay isnt affected is no problem. I use 45-105 gauge. Most often rotosounds which are more prone to string rattle then most. Ernie balls are good strings esp when wanting a bit more crunch to ones sound. Thicker gauge will mainly just make fretting not as easy. If your banging the strings as hard as you can it wont really help cut down string rattle. Only cure is learn to play with precision rather then with muscles. When you do this your ability to change speeds quickly and to play fast will increase.

I think it depends a lot on where you pick at, and the size of your pick. I'm using a Star 1mm pick, and I pick mainly at the back, towards the bridge using .105-45 Cleartone's and I think they sound great. But when I play with 2mm pick, I really like D'Addario EXP's.

I've been working on playing with less muscle. My speed is pretty high though. I play mostly punk and metal and I normally out play the band (which I'm really trying to work on) I'm a beginner so I know there's A Lot of flaws in my techinique. I think the D'Addiero (sp) would be good. That's what I used on my Old peavy and it didn't seem to rattle at all. Although I do think I might have some problems with my nut.

Either way any tips on controlling my speed and lightening my touch?
