Strings for an Playmate Dean Acoustic Bass

Sign in to disble this ad
Guys,

I just received my Playmate Dean Acoustic bass and was disappointed by the heavily metallic sound (even amplified and EQed) of the stock strings. I've looked into mostly warmer sounding strings.

What would be people's recommendations as the best strings for an acoustic bass?

Incidentally, I noticed Carvin has a set of LaBella Deep Talkin' Tapewounds on their website, and are selling it as Acoustic Bass strings. What are people's opinions on this? Should I go with La Bella, or is there something that is more durable, stays in tune better, and sounds warmer (like Rotosound...maybe?)

Also, I heard from a local guitar aficionado that I shouldn't go with La Bella because I could go with a pair of Rotosound Flatwounds that were cheaper but comparable in sound? I've read on LaBella's durability and that has my interest...but if Rotosound is selling something cheaper than La Bella, I'm open to persuasion.

I put a set of D"Addario .050 - .105 on mine and it sounds really good now. The heavier strings does away with the clacky sound of those sucky stock strings. With a heavy set of strings the Dean Playmate is as loud and sounds as good as any ABG I have played.

i put a light gauge set of Martins on mine......it is a pretty noisy instrument but for the price what more can you ask for.......overall its cool but expect that clicky metallic sound with pretty much whatever you use....i made some adjustments to the neck and what not which made things better but i will never expect a perfect unit here.

A light set of Martins? You may as well have left the crappy stock strings on it. You don't have to settle for "that clicky metallic sound" As I said before, try a heavy gauge of strings.

I strung one up with a set of Ernie Ball flats one time, and it sounded decent.
