i play a lot of punk, folk punk, indie punk, and just flat out indie
mainly stuff that sounds like against me! or bad religion
im currently using d'adarrio 50's and they are very bright and have poor tone (imo)
looking for string suggestions that would be good, open to try anything really

I think that's honestly your best call. Try a bunch of different strings and go from there.

| | | | To be honest, I can't remember what strings I used in the mid 70's, but Dean Markleys, Rotos, and D'Addario halfs are all good choices. Just use a pick and look pissed off!
