Strings and pups for VM Squier 70s jazz

What would be a good replacement for the strings and pups on my Squier VM 70s jazz bass. They are the originals that came on it. Thanks,Scott.

Depends entirely on what sound tweak you want new pups and strings to give.

I like Dimazio and EMG pups as fave aftermarket ones. But have also found some stock mfg pups I really like easily just as well.

For strings I'm a dr neon and sunbeams fan along with rotosound swing66.

If you could tell us what changes to the sound your looking for, crunchier, smoother, more defined, more woompy, etc, then better suggestions can be made based on that.

A clear and warm sound I guess. Something versatile as I play classic rock and pop. I'm looking for strings that are smooth on the fingers. The Fenders that come on those basses seem to be scratchy. I may need more than one bass, hopefully happening soon. It has the Duncan Design pups on it. Looking to upgrade strings and pups.

The search function is your friend. There is a pinned thread (in Pickups forum) that is all about J pickup replacement, offering comprehensive reviews of specific models. You'll probably come away from reading it wanting DiMarzio Model J's.

For strings, I'm guessing that you might be about to experiment with half-rounds, or even flats, or tapewounds. I would suggest leaving the pickups alone, for a while, until you find strings that are to your liking, since that may end up being the only variable in need of changing. YMMV, of course.

Thanks, the pickups are really quiet and halfrounds might be the way to go.

I'm also a fan of hi-mass bridges on VM series instruments, but again, YMMV, depending on what you are looking to do, and what you are playing through. I happen to like the Duncan Designed pickups on my VM Jag quite a bit, as well.
