Is it the strings, or the scale?

Just picked up a Spector Q5, which rocks the 35" scale. The low B is AMAZING, even dropped to an A, but the EADG strings feel super tight. Overwound even. The overtones are muted, and the strings don't vibrate much.

I don't know what strings these are, but before I drop coin on a set of my favorite flavor, I want to check with the TB collective. Is it the strings, or the scale?

Both! The scale is only going to make the difference in string tension more noticeable for the A,D, and G strings. However, you don't know what strings are on it, and they may just be bad strings.

Get your favorite strings. I'm sure you'll get your tone back.

The strings. Most stock stings are poor choices imo. The tension diff between 34 and 35 is very small. Would cause such reaction unless theyre allready highe tension tghen your used to and not as good a strings imo.

Most basses (unless they're high-end boutique models), in fact most stringed instruments, come from the factory with shipping strings, which are usually low cost low quality. It's not reasonable to expect a store to change out every set of strings on every instrument, so it's the buyer's responsibility. Even instruments coming stock with D'Addario's (with the different coloured ball ends) seem to be a low quality version of their regular strings.

Almost all string sets have a low tension B and EADG tighter. The 35" scale raises the tension of all strings equally, so you're noticing the top heaviness of the string set more. If you want all strings at the same tension build a custom set from singles or buy a 'balanced tension' set from Circle K Strings or other brands.

I make my own balanced sets. I use Elixir .135,.105,.085,.060,.040. Nicely balanced all across the board.

Thanks for the responses guys. A few things I should have mentioned before I ran off...

The bass was purchased used. These may be the stock strings, but I doubt it. Also, I haven't measured the string gauges yet, but they feel like monsters. I was able to tune a full step down (ADGCF) without getting floppy.

I like bright, crisp strings, with a medium/light tension. I'll throw a set of DRs on it and see what happens.

I use Labella Slappers light guage on my 6 string and absolutely love them. Give'em a shot.

IME, that particular problem is related to the 35" scale. There are string sets that try to fix the issue, but I always find the G string to be thin and tight on 35" basses.
