I made a couple of clips...

I'm testing different strings.

Clip 2 seemed little more mellow where clip 1 seemed to have a lot more mids (to me at least). I voted clip 2.

PS - your bridge is on its way.

Bass 1 sounds better to me between those two. The second one lacks crunch and grind ability. Listening thru Senneheiser HD380 pros headphones.

This is really subjective and depends upon what you're trying to achieve in the mix.

Clip 1 is really fat and round, almost too much. Clip 2 was really tight and relatively subdued, almost not enough.

If I had to mix and burn this track immediately, I'd go with Clip 1 (but then again, I'm a bass player and hate to hear the bass get lost in the mix).

Which one do you like?

To me, the rounds have a little more punch and clarity than the flats. Now on a different type of line, I might prefer the flat string sound, but in this case, I'm voting for clip 2.

PS. I do have flats on my fretless, rounds on the regulars.

Clip 2 was more even sounding, and to my ears, fuller than clip one.

we are all bass players

i like the clip 1 (rounds) tone but clip 2 (flats) is tighter to me (perhaps because i played it better)

Thumbs up 2

sounded cleaner,1 was honkin',,listen to the ending tone(s),not that i don't love`honk'(like Ridley on several Humble Pie songs he flat had the`honk' going on!),i'm not the guy to critique at all but you asked,,,and i been down on myself lately for not be tonal enough(work has been overbearing, practice time has been lacking)

i'd say you could prolly tweak the EQ or whatever you rig is and change tactics with hands and it would sound the exact opposite,,,good post!(i found it interesting)
