strings for a Squier VM Telebass

Sign in to disble this ad
hey all,

I was wondering for those with "mudbuckers" what strings you use?

I want to try to brighten up the tone just a bit, I know that these are def muddy sounding pickups, but I want to use strings that are brighter to help change that a bit.
'
thanks
matt

Try DR Hi Beams. They are pretty bright and should give you what you want.

If you want to get the tele bass as brite as possible without huge mods change out the tone pot for a fender on load pot It removes the pot from the circuit. Also Brite steel strings will help but I have the VM Tele bass and the pot makes the biggest difference. You can get the noload pots at Bass Guitar parts resources.

250K Pots for the Fender. You only need to replace the tone pot.

So far, without the Pot mod (Which I plan to do) I have gotten a much better sound, IMO, out of the Telebass, by using a bright steel string (Labella Hard rockin steel) and then I placed a bit of foam under the strings by the bridge. I know this should make it sound muddy, but it actually allows it to be deeper with out the mud, giving me the freedom to boost the treble on the amp without the clanging of string on fret.

its starting to sound pretty good, until I do the pot mod.

If you are liking the sound you may not want to do the pot Mod. It does make it briter and still works like a normal pot when it is not in the cutout. So the best of both worlds. The other thing to consider is maybe put in a lesser value cap when you change the pot so it won't drain so much if the highs when it is full on.

Throw a set of Flats on it. Thats what that bass was meant for BOOM! Trying to make that bass bright is like trying to keep a dog from licking his balls. At most I would do Nickel Rounds but if it has vintage style frets on it your better off with flats. Steels will diminish vintage frets quickly. Leave it alone and pump out some air moving bottom end!
