Strings of the Stars!

Sign in to disble this ad
I got this idea from the Pedalboards of the Stars thread in the Effects forum.

Post a bassist, the band he/she is with (or if they are solo), and what strings they use! Be as specific as possible and try to include gauges.

John Myung used EXL160-6s or EXL170-6s I believe, one of the sets came standard on his Yamaha signature.

Anyone happen to know what kind of strings Paul Turner uses?

Back on topic (and an easy one); Flea - GHS Boomers (not sure of the gauge though )

Easiest of all maybe: Chris Squire using RotoSound Swing Bass RS66LD, .045-.105.

John Patitucci plays D'Addarios. Recently he's been on a Half-Rounds kick but used to play Prisms/Prosteels.

Jeff Berlin plays Carl Thompson strings.

Janek Gwizdala plays a custom Fender stainless steel set.

Garrett Sayers from The Motet plays Ernie Balls.

Flea uses GHS gauges 45-105 (I'm pretty sure his sig set is just the standard Boomers set).

P-Nut of 311 also uses GHS Boomers, but the five string set.

Sure sound like Roto 66 rounds to me, though I've never checked.

Entwistle being the first to make these strings famous, of course.

I think the flea sig have a different core, but are pretty much the same string.

Timmy C uses Ernie Balls

Les Claypool uses Dean Markley Blue Steels and Carl Thompson strings. I wonder what the CT's are like.

Sam Bolle who tours with Dick Dale uses Dean Markley Blue Steels and changes them daily at Dale's direction.

Yes, he did help James Howe formulate them, but from what I can glean Rotosound was already making some kind of roundwound string. His picture also used to appear on the packet.

I've just been mucking around this afternoon trying to emulate his 'typewriter' technique on my Roto-wearing Tokai P- when I managed to control the attack and get a clean hit on the string, I was astonished by the volume, and sheer amount of harmonic information that rings out. An amazing technique when controlled, and the tone is really unique. Digging in with a pick gives a somewhat similar effect but minus the sheer piano- or bell-like tonal quality.
