I think I just have bad luck with strings...
When I first started out playing I used nickel roundwound D'Addario XL's and was pretty happy for the most part. Moving to a new town that wasn't friendly to D'Addario I had to go looking for other strings and that's where things have gone downhill.
So....I played Ken Smith strings for awhile...They were okay. I tried DR's back then and wasn't happy, Ernie Balls have always sucked in my opinion/experience (dead strings right out of the package). I tried the first gen Elixirs and they were absolutely awful.
I went back to XL's when they came back in favor in my area and stores started stocking them but then I found Rotosounds. The tone was cool and I rolled with Rotosounds for awhile but had problems with consistency and tried a couple of things and ended up with some DR's.
So for the past couple of years I've been rockin' DR SS Lo-Riders. I just popped on a new set and right out of the box the E-string is dead.
Is it just me?? Am I the only person that has bad luck with strings? I've had dead strings out of the box from DR, Rotosound, Ernie Ball, Ken Smith, and in some cases completely missing strings from Rotosound and Ernie Ball.
Often times I don't see any recourse for it. I usually buy a few sets at a time so I don't get stuck in a situation wishing I had some fresh strings and not have them available and by that time I can't really go back to the store and gripe about it.
Anyway...I'm just venting a bit.
