Strings for Warwick Thumb 6 string

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Warwick 6 string BO Thumb with an Aguilar OBP-3 preamp and Nordstrand Fatstacks with D'Addario ProSteels. While the bass sounds great, these strings are a bit too harsh on this bass for my taste.

Anybody have any suggestions?

They probably sound more harsh playing by yourself than in a band context. But, steel is bright. Maybe try some nickel or flats. What about rolling off the treble knob? You may appreciate the brightness in the future.

Why didn't anyone ever tell me bossa nova sounded so good?

Good point. I think I might also try nickel.

Id reccomend trying rotosound swing 66 or one of the round core DRs. Never been a fan of daddario and such brands sound char for use by myself. Maybe youll find some other brands better suited to your sound.

I find ProSteels to be very harsh strings in general. Ken Smith Steels or the Warwick (Black?) Labels might be a better choice.

Otherwise, if you're going to introduce nickel into the mix, I suggest Circle K strings.

I've got D'Addario nickel wounds on my Thumb and I'm happy with them
Good feel, stay in tune, and you can get a lot of tones out of them
Whatever you go with, the trick is going to be finding a tapered low B

GHS Progressives might be right up your alley. Not as harsh as steel, but brighter than most nickels. Plus their 'saddle hugger' tapered design is what you need for your Warwick.

Get them here...get a 4 string set and just add whatever gauges you want to make it a 6 set...or of course get the 5 and add your C string.

I would try Circle K balanced .130 set, unless you like lighter strings, then the .125 set. They have been amazing on my Zon Legacy. Just the right amount of top end zing and growl without being too clangy or glassy. I usually have to turn the treble and horn down on my red head, but run it a little higher with these and it is still not harsh. The only strings I have found that come close were la Bella slappers, but they are $60 a set.

I played a NT6 for 6 years as my sole bass...tried many sixer sets and settled on Warwick black labels. I'd not call them harsh but they were a little aggressive. I found no other string made my Thumb sound more like what i thought a Warwick Thumb should sound like than those...after all, it is a Warwick.

Another +1 to the GHS Progressives. They are warmer but still articulate; they are on my Streamer LX 6 string currently. The silk on the B string though is long. It WILL sit on the nut and a little over.
