Strings? What strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Back in "the day", I had a rock setup which was a Gibson Thunderbird. A Cerwin Vega double scoop 18" with a front loaded 12" and a Music Man 150W head. For that set up I used Roto Sound strings exclusively.
I played in a Top 40 band with that set up for awhile. Kind of hard to play funky on it!

Anyway I am in the process of looking for a P'Bass or a Jazz, but am unsure what strings to set it up with. I am not proficient at slapping and popping so that will not be my main focus though I plan on practicing it. At this point in my life I will most likely be playing classic rock. I love the Motown, James Jamerson sound, though I also like the sound of smooth jazz basses.

Can anyone help me suggesting strings I should use for these sounds? Flat, round, plastic coated (boy that takes me back!)

Thanks!

I like DR round wounds - round wound strings are easier for me to play. I alternate [45/105] Sunbeams and HighBeams after each string change - I have HighBeams on now, Sunbeams will go on next. I like them both for different reasons:

Sunbeams - Nickel plated, round wound, round core; musically warm with a touch of brightness, softer feel, nice balanced tone.

High Beams - Stainless steel, round wound, round core; slightly brighter with a lot of snap - jazzier - nice on a J.

If you love the Jamerson, Motown sound, flatwounds are the way to go.

^ Agree!

As far as i know, LaBella actually makes a "Jamerson sig" set?

Get a P bass and that, and i would guess you to be happy.

I use Fender flats on my Jazz. Nice classic sound. But I can get some pop if I need it.
