Strings for Yamaha RBX765A

I have played this bass with the strings that came with it (5 years), and now I think it's time to change. I'm trying to find out a little more about strings and what influence different strings have on the sound of the bass. The sound on my bass lacks a little brightness and punch, and is kind of uneven. I also get some finger noise. Could a change of strings help me with these issues, and what strings would you recommend? Thanks!

I have the exact same bass as you and I use D'addario XL's on mine. I used to use Ernie Ball Super Slinkies, but they were a tad too bright for my liking as much as I actually liked the sound.

The D'addario's were a winner for me. Slightly growlier tone, better B string and cheaper! (£19 compared to £28 for the EB-SS)

Definitely worth a shot I'd say.

If you search the "strings " forum here you'll find a lot of info. Generally for a bright sound the strings to use would be round wounds, but they are inclined to produce finger noise. Flat wound strings give little or no finger noise, but have a warm mellow tone. There is a kind of in-between string called ground wound which I have never used so can't comment on.

Thanks!

But I'm a little confused by all the scales and stuff. Should I buy short, medium, long or super long scale. And what about the gauge?

Hope you can help me with this also.

Well the RBX765A is a 34" scale I believe so that'd make it a medium scale as far as strings are concerned.

As for gauge I used the Regular Gauge (45, 65, 80, 100, 130) the advantage of these was the slightly larger "B" string compared to the Slinkies I'd used previously (.130 compared to the slinkies .125) so this gave a much better responding, feeling and sounding "B" string.

These're the set I'm using currently, and probably what I'll stick with in future unless I feel the need to experiment again.

a 34" scale bass is long scale and average string gauge would be
45-65-85-105.
