I just bought a brand new set of D'Addario Chromes to put on my Stingray and the wrapping on the D string keeps ripping off and it has completely ruined the string. The crazy part is that I dont even tune in E standard, rather, I tune a 1/2 step down.
Why is this happening, its really pissing me off since I spent $35 on these strings and now the D is ruined

If so, these coming off won't ruin the string. Having said that, they shouldn't come off as long as you made a right angle bend in the end of the string before cutting off the excess.

Ive been stringing my basses and guitars for years on my own now and this has happened to me twice now, both with D'Addario flats.
I just put on some rotosound rounds with silk wrappings on my jazz an hour ago with no problems so I know I am not doing it wrong |

hmm...odd. I'd need to know more then...i.e. type of posts on the machine heads (does the right angle go down into a hole or only thread through a slot)
I assume its a "standard" scale bass?

I assume its a "standard" scale bass? | ya, its a standard USA EBMM Stingray. The tuners have a hole that the strings go down into, you make the right angle, and then they wrap around. Whats happening is that the silk windings are coming undone on the string where the angle is at. Not the angle that comes out of the hole, but the angle where the string starts to wrap around the tuning peg.
So instead of tightening as I wind, it just strips more and more winding off the string and the pitch goes nowhere.
I hope you can understand my explanation, its tough to put these kinds of things into words. |

I use chromes a lot, and never make the bend. I cut it to length, snip the silk off with scissors if needed, then stick it down the hole (I have P basses). Chromes are extremely stable once broken in. |
