Stupid Question: How to ID strings?

Sign in to disble this ad
Proving that there are no stupid questions, just stupid people I pose this: what kind of strings do I have ? I bought a Dean Performer ABG from a pawn shop a few months ago and the guy said it had LaBella's on it. They have an extremely smooth feel and are pretty quiet, giving it a near double bass sound. I always heard these basses were somewhat loud among ABG's but I don't find that to be the case here. I am thinking they are flats, but as an amateur that has only played round wounds what do I know? They are very smooth, chrome in color, with blue on both ends of them. Thanks all! Great tone by the way.

Oh yeah, are flats actually flat in shape or is the core flat and then wound round? These strings are round and have no flat spots..

Flatwounds have an outer wrap that is flat like a ribbon. Roundwounds have an outer wrap of round wire.

Your description suggests they are flatwounds.
