Suggest strings for a 35 inch scale thru body 5 string?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got two Peavey Millennium 5 string basses that I want to restring.

I thought about Sadowsky blue steels, but they don't make them to string thru the body.

I'd really like something with a tapered b.

Suggest away please!

Lakland strings are tapered B, long enough and sound great.

I swear by my MTD nickels, but the new versions don't go through body!

Lakland 5 string sets in SS and Nickle plated. They are made by GHS. The SS are Super-Steels and the Nickle are Boomers. Both with a tapered B for thru-body stringing on a 35" scale.

DR strings I found are all long enough for thru-body on a 35 " scale, but the only B string they make that is tapered for thru-body stringing is the Long-Neck B string which is SS and is really a Low-Rider (hex-core) that is tapered. I have used that B with a 4 string set of Low-Riders and even High-Beams and the Marcus Miller set (both round-cores). It works great with them and is a really good B string.

Not sure if D'Addario is your brand, but that's "my brand"... I don't particularly care for SIT strings, which is what the bass came with. I just ordered a 5-string set of D'Addario EXL Super Longs and a .032 high C (they don't make a 6-string set), they should be here Thursday-ish, I'll keep you posted.

5sg.

P.S. The SIT's aren't long enough for stringing through the body.

I didn't think the SIT's would be long enough for the string thru body.

Do the Lakland strings last very long?

DR Long Necks are long enough, they're stainless steel, and have a tapered B. I have a set on a Warwick and they sound pretty good, haven't tried them through-body on my Lakland yet.

I thought all the strings in the Long Neck set were tapered, not just the B.

I use D'Addarrio XL-170-5's on my basses. My Fender P Deluxe V is through the body and the strings are just fine for that.

I think Fender basses are all 34" scale though, I'm pretty sure?

Yes, DR Long-Necks are a tapered set. They are actually made to be used thru-body as they have a long taper to them. If used thru the bridge it can cause some weird chorusing effect on some basses as the tapered part will reach to the rear pick-up. When used thru-body they fit perfectly.

+1 on the Long-Necks. DR strings are the king; great tone plus longevity.

That's good to know. Thanks!

Ken Smith Rockmasters (stainless steel roundwound) are available in extra-long, with a taperwound B string.

Sorry I haven't posted yet... I got my EXL Super Longs on my Stambaugh (35" scale, strung through the body) last night, no problems. They're not taper wound if it matters, but they work just fine. And that's my brand!

I used Lakland's stainless set (starting with a 45 G) for a long time on my Skyline 55-01. But I tried a set of DR Hi-Beams because I wanted a NON-tapered B and it sounds so much better. Non-tapered seems to sound more like the other four strings instead of like an after-thought.

You know, I think I agree with that... I put those D'Addarios on my Stambaugh last night and maybe it's my imagination, but stringing through the body also seemed bring out the low frequencies more as well? I haven't played it through my live rig yet, but it seemed to "connect" more than the strings that were on there anyway... but they weren't strung through the body.

I don't know, maybe I'm talking out of my a$$, but it sounds good and that's what I wanted.

Sadowsky makes XL Blue Steels for 35" basses...

I just put them on my LEJ 5 and I love them! It's those or DR HiBeams
