Suggest strings for a Peavey Patriot...

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up a '83 Patriot, and I'm going to take it all apart & clean it up, along with a set up & fresh strings. This bass seems to sound quite good, but to me is missing some thump. I can EQ more bottom in, but I'm wondering if there are some strings that sound good on these basses?

Thanks

I use D'Addario NW XL's on my L2K, I didn't know if there strings that will add to the thump or tightness of the low end.

Rotosound and DR neon do low end better then any Ive tried. The rotosounds are among the least bright stainless roundwounds I know of and as such as esp good for nice dark tone. The DR Neons are a tad bit more defined in the lower bass but are also an little bit brighter then rotosound nswing 66. The latter is easilly fixed with light rolloff of basses treble as desired. I would not reccomend the dean markley blue steels since theyre the brightest strings Ive ever tried and you indicate you want darker not brighter sound.

I am now learning on a patriot bass strung with ken smith stainless lights. Mine was purchased off the classifieds and setup by MNairhead using those strings per his reccomendation.

My experience as a player is limited but I can say that this is one hot setup. Very bright. Very powerful. Very sensitive. The action was setup superbly and learning to play with so much sensitivity is a challenge. I couldn't ask for a better bass to learn on but the combination of these strings and that super hot pickup make for a sensitive instrument. My patriot has been passed around between friends and teachers and everyone returned the bass after a few minutes insisting that it was a comfortable but unforgiving instrument. Most of them could not play it without all kinds of string noise, fret noise, zips, zings, and clack. In fact, I watched them adjust their EQ (no mids, no highs) to tune out those noises instead of changing how they played.

I don't consider that a negative. It's forcing me play precisely and with a delicate touch. That could be a better review of the patriot than of the ken smith stainless light strings but the combination brings something special out of them both. It is an unassuming bass with a very impressive sound. I've been warned that stainless strings could be killer for a new player but I haven't had any problems adjusting.

+1 on DR Sunbeams. Or get DR FatBeams if you want more brightness.

To begin with... you're really describing a Fury or t20

You "could" try BEAD tapewounds..... GHS makes the thinnest ones out there.

you could be describing a different bass
