Suggestions: Flats for Stingray 5?

Sign in to disble this ad
Will flats give me the following things? and if so, any suggestions on which ones?

What I like, Ernie ball slinkies after 20-30 hours of play. No zing, good growl and nice low end.

What I hate Ernie ball slinkies the first 2 weeks I have them.

My issue, I only have one bass, I can't have it sound like crap for 2 weeks. I need strings that sound like this out of the package. I don't mind buying strings 1-2 times month, I just need a good sound after 1-2 hours of break in instead of 2 weeks.

Also, I plan to compensate for the higher string tension with lower action. Anyone see a loose screw in the philosophy?

Any ideas...thanks,
Johnny Rhum

EB flats. I don't know about 5-string sets, but 4-string is pretty nice. They may be too clanky at first and it takes more time for flats to break in, but aftre that you can have the same set for years (as with most flats).

I think maybe D'Addario Chromes have what you're looking for. Very nice on an SR5, as are EB Flats.

I went ahead and ordered some D'addarrio ECB81-5's. I'll let you know how that goes when I get them. I was also thinking half rounds, but I decided to try flats again. I didn't like them the first 2 times....but my needs have changed.

For a month now the Chromes have done the trick. Thanks for the lead.
