Rotosound Flats are not going to get you into thump territory. They are fine strings, but the warm, Jamerson-like sound isn't going to happen.

LaBella or Fender flats are what you want. I suggest getting lighter gauges, as the heavy gauges get very, very stiff.

In my experience, LaBellas will have a richer, more complex sound, the Fenders will be thumpier.

Then what type of sound will a Roto flat eventually produce?

I feel pretty dumb. Here is the video I wanted to post.

That's the sound I was looking for. More suggestions please.

Damnit. I forgot to add: put the D and G from my Rounds and put them on my good bass. So it would be E A (flats) D G (rounds). That's another option I've been heavily leaning on.

LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats, either the Jamerson set (HIGH tension, big string) or the FL760 set. The former is what is on that recording, the latter almost identical with a bit less thump but still a whole heap of thump. Try the whole set first, they are really nicely balanced string to string and very musical on all four.
