ok i play a vintage squire modified fretless jazz bass. Came with standard roundwounds but these strings do not exactly let me play any slap bass. I want to know your guys reccomendation for what strings i should get flat or round to fit my style
I like playing alot of indie, ska, disco/funk and my budget is somewhere form 20-35 dollars please help me get some better strings
I'm not an expert on slap style but I don't think fretless lends itself to slap style since I'm pretty sure the principle is to pop the string against the last fret (e.g. fret #22) with the thumb. How do you do that with no frets? I'm not saying you can't do it. I'm just saying bouncing the string off of the last fret is what gives you that bright, percussive attack. I don't slap and I don't own a fretless so I'm taking alot of guesses here. Maybe you can enlighten me about this?

well well... VM Squiers are bright sounding instruments.. if you want to play slap.. try light gauges of Ernie Ball 40-95 or GHS Bass Boomers.. they should compliment the bright wood.. however if you look for a brighter more biting slap tone... i'd suggest DR Hi Beams
Rounds that don't play slap...?? Hmm...
I've never encountered any round that could not be slapped (that's an odd sentence ). Nickel or staninless, 0.35-0.95 to 0.50-0.105.
So what goes wrong with slap and what tone are you trying to achieve.
DR Lo-Riders. Get them in stainless steel or nickel plated, but personally I prefer the nickels. Hell, on the cardboard packaging of the nickel Riders, it even says "Lo-Riders <33 2 Funk"
