Question Sustain w/ Flats

Sign in to disble this ad
I have Chromes on my fretless. I love them except when I switch from 45-100 to 40-95 for tone/tension reasons i lost noticable amounts of sustain. Even with the higher tensions sustain wasn't great.
Is this normal? Is there something I can do to help my sustain without going to completely different strings?

Flats aren't exactly known for their "long sustain".

i would think a lighter gauge string wouldnt resonate as much anyway.

It could be that the lighter tension means you are digging in more.

Playing harder decreases sustain. Not truly, but when the initial sounding is loud the sustain level seems lower in comparison.

Neither is fretless, but I want to do what I can.
Sounds like I need to go back to a slightly heavier guage.

If your current action allows for it, lower the bridge saddles about a half screw turn each. Ive noticed for myself that lower action helps sustain and voice both. You may get a little bit of clank that doesnt affect sustain with very low action. But to me thats a plus sound wise for in the mix etc.
