Swapping a ball end

Sign in to disble this ad
My question is simple

I read on here that a guy using a bass tuned EADGC had used a guitar D string for the C, and switched the small ball end for a larger one to fit a bass bridge.

I got a D string and the ball end is too small, but I do have a ball end from a broken bass string I can switch it with. How do I do this without breaking the string? I tried it once and the wire came loose, rendering the string useless.

(P.S. - don't even bother saying the guitar string won't be long enough, because it is. 35" scale bass, too. )

I'd perhaps just trial it first by slipping a free bass ball-end down the string before you thread it through the bridge.

That's a good idea. Just slide a loose ball end that is big enough down the string until it stops at the smaller ball end. Then you have the size you need without compomising the string's integrity, and a reuseable ball end for the next string of that gauge.
