Swapping strings between 2 basses?

Sign in to disble this ad
Stupid question:

I have a gig in a few hours and do not have time to visit the local Music Shop. I am taking 2 basses but mainly will play my J Bass. However I like the Fat Beam strings on the P Bass that I'm NOT bringing. Would it be wrong to exchange the strings between those 2 basses? Would that in some way kill the strings performance in any way?

I have a set of GHS Bass Boomers on my Geddy Lee Jazz that I took off of my Peavey Fury. They sound great. I don't think it hurt them at all.

I have done it. They may not be able to hold tuning, as it happens when they are brand new, so I wouldn't advise you to do it hours before your show.

If both basses have fast top load bridges. I could see doing that. Cause then one doesnt have to unravel the curled wrapped around post end of the strings. Just loosen them enough to slide upward and off the post. Release strings from bridge end. And attach to the other bass. But when one would have to get the wrapped up end thru the rear holes on regular bridges. I wouldnt want to do that. Id just take the bass with the better strings and use it instead of taking its strings off.

Y'know,I've often wondered why ALL bridges aren't top loading.
Plus points:
Faster string changes mid-gig (should the need arise)
Longer lasting strings due to the need to straighten out strings prior to removal no longer required.
Less chance of damage to bass during string changes,

Negatives:

Erm....
