switching between flats and rounds

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to be entering the studio with my band soon and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with switching between flatwound strings and roundwound strings on the same bass for different tracks within the same recording session. Would I have to adjust my truss rod or intonation or should they remain the same? Aside from the time it would take to switch, are there any other issues that could come up?

You will almost certainly have to do a complete setup if you switch from flats to rounds - at least to set the intonation.

I recommend two basses. One for flats and one for rounds.

This. Ask the studio if they have a bass you can use in addition to your own.

Even if I'm switching between Flatwound and Roundwound sets that are the same brand and gauge?

Yes, even if they are the same brand and gauge.

A string change, plus set up is a variable I wouldn't want to introduce into the studio evironment, especially if someone is paying for the studio time.

As big a flatwound fan as I am, I'd opt to string with rounds, and let the engineer try and shape you a flatwound tone. A bit of foam for a mute will help to get some flatwound decay into your tone. I just recorded a tune with a roundwound strung jazz..... when all the tracking was done, and I started mixing, I realized I should have stuck with my flat strung P for the song. A bit more bump in the low mids, and a little bit more cut in the highs, and it sounds like I did it with flats. I tried gating it a bit to get a bit more of a quicker decay, but opted out of that, because it sounded good without it.

No changing strings - not practical due to setup changes. Either pick a sound and go with it, or bring two basses.
