SX (essex) + Rotosound 77 Jazz flats = problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
i have a 62 sbp jazz fretless SX bass (5 string). i decided to change the stock strings to a set of the above rotosound flats that i had on hand. i noticed that the A string, tuned to pitch, is REALLY hard to tighten (as it gets closer to 440 pitch). the E string also requires a firm (firmer than normal) hand to tighten to pitch but the D and G strings are pretty normal feeling.
i wonder if the tension of these strings is too much for the bass? on a side note, i originally tried the 77's on my Lakland 55-01 and i was unable to get the relief out of the neck while they were on the bass. the truss rod nut was unable to turn anymore to straighten the neck. when i took them off and put on a different brand, straight as an arrow and no problems.

can anyone comment on these strings and if they are known for being unusual high tension? thanks

I owned a set. Very good strings but they are very high tension my bass needed a big time truss rod adjustment when I put them on and then again, back to normal, when I took them off for the daddario Xls on it now. They didn't damage anything just very high tension.

high tension strings, I actually prefer 77s myself. they make a 5 string version? what would be the b string equivalent to the .105 e string on the 77s like a .140? I been thinking about taking my SX 4 and making it a BEAD tuning.

Thanks for this; I have a 44-01 and was undecided between the 77's and the Fender 9050L... it's gonna be the Fenders now, I guess

All the best,
Adrian

thanks for the info on the high tension of these strings. the B is a 0.130...actually, i have a Labella 0.128 and that barely fit the bridge hole so i haven't even put the 77 B string on there. i think i might have to take this set off and retire it....it's only money after all, right?

I wouldnt use that high tension a string on any bass that showed signs of haveing difficulty with them. I'd use lighter gauge version or not use them at all for the bass. Yeah it cost more then trying guitar strings, but thats part of really finding best strings possible. Trying various brands. Can be somewhat expensive a learning experience. But worth it for end result. The Fenders could be an excellent comprimise.

me!

i tried a set of `steve harris' rotos and at standard tuning they were demanding of a neck adjustment to compensate for the tension, oddly enough i missed the `feel' when freting versus Chromes(witch when returning to 100 chromes(can't remember the P/N) i had to back off the truss rod,i made a post here asking similar questions but i doubt anybody bothered to answer

i'm using chromes and drop tuning(just jamming/garage band shtuff)=my bass is reasonably happy at this point
