My apologies. You are correct, and I have a data error.
When I entered the new data into my spreadsheet, I did a cut and paste to a new line, then plugged in the new string tension numbers. I'll go back and rectify that.
On your comment, I grabbed the TI catalog, and manually added up the Super Alloy which comes to 179 pounds total in 4 string. This is slightly less tension than the PB.

I'm kinda getting bored/bummed with TI Flats on my P... just not getting what I think should be coming from the P. |

I've tried Chromes, Labellas, Thoms, Fenders, Elixir, Rotos, off-brands and I just keep coming back to those 12-month old DRs. They thump, they sing, they growl, they have bottom, they have mids and grunt. They are everything I want for my Precision. I do have a set ot TIs on the Jazz tho, but it stays in the case pretty much. On the gig, the P always comes out (woops, doesn't sound right does it). Anyhow, its got the b*lls with those DRs. There was always something missing in every other string I used with my P's.

Just curious. I used to use the Sunbeams all the time. |

| | | | BS, I use the LR nickel. I am not comfortable with floppy strings so I prefer the hex core which gives a little more tension. When new, the strings are just too dang bright, but after a few weeks of sweat and dirt, they lose all that zingyness. Maybe most folks would call them "dead", but on my Precision, cranked through an SVT, they do everything I want them to. I also like flats, but I haven't found a perfect set yet.

There is a huge difference in tone betwee the open E string and the 5th fret on the B, and it's kinda warbly overall. Anyone else notice this? I rarely slap the B, so I'm half tempted to throw my old JF on there (which is REALLY good) cuz the JR B is so crappy.
And down the slippery slope back to flats I go... |

Just tried that little experiment for S&G, and the JF didn't sound any better (and if I had remembered how hard it is to get that humungaloid .136 B to sit in my bridge, I wouldn't have bothered ). I think the real issue isn't so much that the B is sucky, but that the open E just sounds so frickin' good. I guess I can live with that. |

The Superalloys really are amazing strings. I've only used the four string sets so far, and I can't wait to try the 5 string set.
They have the same small windings as the Jazz Rounds, but they feel more like the Powerbass in tension. I had them on my Cort Curbow Retro first, and they really kicked some serious booty. They responded really well to digging in when you wanted to add a little dirt. I changed that bass out to Jazz Rounds so I could put the Superalloys on my 8 string Curbow (I use Ken Smith piccolo strings for the octaves). The smaller windings work better with the octave strings for the way I play my 8 string. They feel a little bit more rubbery than the Powerbass, but not so you'd notice, really. I only noticed it when I press down both the octave and root strings together.
I'm really dying to put these on my fretless Bongo arrives, as that's going to be the true test. I might break down and put these on my Black Sapphire Bongo, instead, but I need to see when Dude is going to have another 5 string set in stock, first. |

The tone and tension matched up well with the rest of the set. I had a hard time keeping the high C string from getting lost in the mix, though.
Here's the bass with my blues band: http://www.mindspring.com/~jshew2/tu...LongSample.mp3 |

They are on my fretless lakland JO, and they are to my ears, very punchy, clear and warm. I tried a few other sets of different strings on the same bass with no luck. The Fralins are a bit high end and trebley(?) sounding for my taste, but the superalloys really smoothed the bass out, tamed the highs, and they really punch.
Good luck with the string search, I think mine may be over. I really want to try the jazz rounds though... |
