tape wound ?

Hey guys I have a very short (21") scale bass uke that I am currently building. I bought a set of La Bella 5 string tapewounds, planning to use the BEA strings tuned EAD. The package says to only wind the silk portion of the string around the post or it will certainly break. I'm going to obviously come up well short of the silk portion. Has anybody wound the non-silk part of the string with good results before I throw $27 down the tubes?? Thanks

I have with out any problems, in fact I've had them on my bass 4 time before I threw them away (not my thing). It was only on the E string, though.
