Taper over the nut??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey now,

Just loaded a free set of Daddario Chromes on my Stingray Classic this evening. The bass can only be loaded through the body. As I began the install of the E I immediately noticed that it begins to taper over the nut. I have plenty of length on the key but again the fat part of the string is about half way down the 1st fret with the silk/thread basically hanging over. I installed the rest and each is similar..all have the blue thread about midway down into the 1st fret. Is this no good and the potential of an issue?

The strings you have don't work with string through body. String through the bridge or go with extra long string sets. Some strings are not good at bending at that angle with string through body and over the bridge. Drop back ten yards and punt........LOL.

I had a similar situation with short strings on my 'through the body' Washburn scavenger. On mine, when open, the strings would buzz as the taper would bring the string closer to the frets. You need to get Super/Extra Long strings so the taper is after the nut. From memory the D'addario website can provide some good info.

Ooops...this is no good. The taper philosophy works at the bridge but not at the nut.

You'd be surprised at the number of used basses that I've seen where the tapered step-downs don't even clear the nut slot.

Is this a new thing with string companies? Why do they make the nut side taper so long?

No, and they don't. The strings he bought are too short for his bass strung that way.
