Cool taper wound / full wound?

Hello,

At the risk of sounding stupid, what is a the difference between taper wound strings and full wound strings?

taper wounds allow for better intonation

I suppose the differences dont really amount to much sonic wise.

The reason why I initially asked about taper/full wound was because I broke the D string on my new bass - and replaced it with another from a spare set. The strings that came on the guitar are different around the tuning posts compared to the rest of the length of the string.
(if that makes sense). I thought maybe this is what was "tapered".


With the spare string, the winds go all the way up the entire length of the string - including the bit that goes around the tuning post. Does this matter?
