Taper Wound - Taper Before Bridge?

I just got a new 5er that came with Elixirs, and the "B" string is a taper wound that tapers to a smaller gauge BEFORE it crosses the bridge. Is there a reason for this sound-wise?

Location: West Memphis/Marion area, AR.
I have heard some say it adds to the sustain and punch of the string. In my experience, I have heard little difference.
