Tapered E string = less thud?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if using a tapered string will results in less thud/mud?

I need my E string to be focused and tight sounding and cutting like the rest of the other strings.

I've been using DD XLs and with a pick I can get the tone I'm after, however, with finger style it is just a thud monster with no character.

So I was wondering if tapered E string will give me what I'm looking for. I'm also going to experiment with some new strings. Especially DR Lo-Riders nickel and steel and La Bella Hard rockin Steels.

Anyhow, please shed some light with your experience with tapered E strings and their tone characteristics. Also, what MFG make good sounding 4banger sets with tapered E.

Thanks

i like a tapered B string on some basses. It really does help focus the lowend.

Sadowsky has a great set.

I'm not a fan of tapered strings for a couple of reasons. First, I like the heavier bass sound. Second, they tend to vibrate too easily and that makes muting more of an issue. Of course, these are my opinions only and with that said I can suggest some that you may like to try.

Fender Super Bass with tapered E string.

Dean Markley SR 2000 - All the strings in the set are tapered.

It's really something you have to try and decide for yourself. Some of us like 'em, some don't.

I use tapered B and E strings. I have never noticed any over vibration or losses of any kind.
