tapered strings

I keep on hearing about tapered strings but still have no idea what they are? whats the difference in them compared to others??

Instead of the whole thickness of winding going over the bridge saddle, tapereds will have an 'unwound' portion; just the core with none of the outer windings. (I could easily be off on the finer details, but that gives the idea.)

They are supposed to give improved intonation.

Donīt mix up taperwound strings with tapewounds.

Tapewounded strings are wraped with nylon. Sound similar to flatwound strings but they have looser tension.

Sometimes, tapered strings leave the tapered end going over the bridge saddles. Not my idea of a good time. Only ever tried the DR's, and I'm not a fan.
