Tapered strings safe for string through?

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this question has been asked, but after slogging through the forum I can't find it.

I've got a set of Sadowsky nickels with a tapered B I'd like to string my string through Peavey with, but I'm not sure the tapered if the tapered string works with the string through setting - will it damage the bass if I go string through?

Won't hurt the bass at all, no way. If the string's overall length is long enoung so that you can go through the body and the wrap is OK at the nut you'll be fine.

Most string-through basses have metal ferrules which would prevent any damage. Heck, a non-tapered steel roundwound would probably do more damage, being essentially a big rat-tail file.

I'm sure it'll be fine, as the strength of the string isn't really in the windings but in the core. The only issue I see is that if you have taper wounds because you want the taper on the bridge saddles, the tapered portion of the string may or may not be long enough when strung through the body. That might not be much of a downside for you, but something to consider, anyway.
