I have not tried the D'addarios, but I know the LaBella's very well, I have them on four basses right now in fact. They are bright for sure, but in a good way. You can really hear the pitch of the note. You have to be careful with fret noise, because they pick it up very well. Nonetheless, they are my favorite string at the moment.
They will last pretty much forever, provided with don't nick, chip or dent them. Which is pretty hard to do But because they last so long, pretty much only physical damage will take them out.
The regular gauge (original) set is light enough, imo. Yes, the strings are thick, but super easy on the fingers. I'd like to try the light set one day just to check them out, but I doubt I would switch.
