tapewounds suggestions?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm having a bit of trouble with some GHS tapewounds I put on a fretless Pbass... I wanted a set with a B so I could tune BEAD, but the only 5er set I could find was the GHS, which are for 35" scale... and they're much more floppy than I care for on a 34" bass. I usually use heavy strings and like a stiff feel, and these are just rubberbandy.....

Any suggestions? La Bella makes a set (for almost $60!!!!)..... has anyone tried that?

Great tone, inexpensive, and readily available from a variety of retailers, most of the time even in your local shop.

Go to www.carvin.com and check out the prices of their LaBella Tapes. Yo will be surprised. Their shipping is usually pretty stiff, ($11) so it may be good to order more than one set or get a few other things you have been needing.
I think the LaBellas are a little more tensioned than the GHS tapes since their gauges are higher.

Good suggestion, but I think you missed the part about the low B.

Does anyone happen to no the "speaking" or "wound" length on the LaBella 5 string set?

I just threw a set of Fender .110 tapewounds on my ABG... MY GOD! Tasty! I most likely will never go back to phosphor bronze again.... great tone.

I believe roto makes a five string set of their TruBass88 strings - essentially the original tapewound string...

Status has a 5 string set

I have an ABG strung up with the four string version and love it.

+1 on the rotos. www.juststrings.com

My shipping was $6.95 - if you have any string needs, it's always good to get everything you need.

I read a mini-review by another TBer where he said that the Status stings did not taper at all. i.e. the B string was 0.125 from the ball to the tuning peg end.

Can you confirm or refute this?

I have not tried the GHS, but I have a set of LaBella 760N on a 5-string. I really like light strings, and these are not that. I even use an A from this set as an E string on my Lightwave when the Acousticore E breaks, and it's still a little too stiff. So, they might just be what you are after.

I could measure them tomorrow if no one else steps up. LaBella's website has gotten even worse than it used to be.

I have the four string set on right now. I do not remember any taper. The gauge and tension were close enough to roundwound strings previously on that no change needed to be made.

You could email Rob at Status. He is very helpful.
