| | | | Which Tapewounds are these?

I picked up a used fretless that has tapewounds on it. This is the first set of tapewounds I've ever had on a bass, being very satisfied with roundwounds all these years. I expected to change out the tapes for rounds or halfrounds, but I've fallen in love with these tapewounds. They're super easy to play, feel great on the fingers, and are deep and articulate all the way down to the low B.
The trouble is that I've never played tapewounds before and have no idea which ones are on the bass. They have purple windings. Can any of you tape players tell me which tapewounds have purple windings? |

| | | | Outstanding, thanks! I'll assume the LaBellas are the only ones with purple silk unless someone else posts a different set. Thanks again! |

Rotosound TruBass 88 = Gold Silk
D'Addario Black Nylon Tapewound = Dark Blue Silk
GHS Black Nylon Tapewound = Red Silk
LaBella Deep Talkin' Tapewound = Purple Silk
Fender Black Nylon (Not smooth has humps/bumps) = Black Silk
Status (not smooth has humps/bumps) = Black Silk
Those are the ones I know of off the top of my head. |

This will be a helpful list for just the reason the OP spoke. |

| | | | Thanks for the list, SLaPINFuNK! Very cool. I'm thinking of putting tapewounds on another of my basses for a less aggressive sound. This gives me the options.
I assume the humps/bumps in the Fenders and Status strings are because they are roundwounds under the tape while all the others are flats. |

Roto tapes are among the smoothest, but they're Swing 66's under the tape.

| | | | Is there a noticeable difference in tone between the tapewounds with flats underneath the tape vs. rounds? |

I am working on some stuff for my site including underlying construction etc...
I believe the rotos are just tape wound over a core wire which makes them so warm and thumpy! (but I of course want to cut one apart to see ) |

I have 2 sets that busted at the G tree but am holding onto them in case I get a shortscale 4 and/or 5 I like them so much.
had to swap out to my backup which is a set of nickel tapercore roundwounds

| | | | If you decided to do that Rotosound investigative surgery, SLaPINFuNk, let us know what you find. It's just the kind of thing obsessive bass players want to know. |

All tapewound manufacturers that I know of use roundwounds. |

But I find that kind of hard to believe naturally and of course I have heard otherwise too. So unfotunatley I am probably going to sacrifice a whole set of many tapes in this experiment.
light gauge flat wounds would make the most sense imho... but we shall see!
