Tension Increase from 34" to 35" scale

Sign in to disble this ad
Sorry if this has been posted before, but could not find any information

Will there be any significant string tension increase from a 34" scale to a 35" scale bass.
and if so how much?

I pulled some tension info from Circle K strings where a .124" (B string) has 32lbs tension...if this is presented on a 35" scale bass..will it go up ..ie 37lbs.

Thanks for the input

See the explanation of tension at http://www.daddario.com/upload/tension_chart_13934.pdf
Tension = U * (2 * L * F)squared / 386.4 where L is scale length in inches
Therefore tension is proportional to L squared. So from 34" to 35" the tension is multiplied by (35/34)squared = 1.0597. An increase of 5.97 percent.

The Circle K Strings tension chart is for a 34" scale, to calculate tension for scales other than 34", multiply the tension value by (your scale in inches / 34) squared.
The tension values are divided into diagonal regions, each diagonal region corresponds to a particular octave. Starting from the small triangular region in the bottom right corner and working upwards, the octave numbers are: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4.

To be honest, I did not notice any extra tension on the 35" scale bass.

No significant increase in tension between 34 and 35 scale.

ixlramp said it best. There will definitely be an increase in string tension from 34" to 35" scale length. Whether 6% is significant to you...well, that's your call. You can also increase the tension by using a larger gauge string or by tuning to a higher pitch.

In the Circle K thread, I posted an interactive tension guide that allows you to change the scale length so that all tension follows suit.

Just pulling the figures for you, a .124 string tuned to B0 on a 34" scale has 32.85 lbs. At 35", it has 34.81 lbs.

EDIT: I've attached the spreadsheet to this post as well.

Roughly 2.5 pounds - about one gauges' difference.
