tension question

Does anyone know how much different the tension would going from Dean markley blue steel 50-105 to 50-105 Chromes would be? I am wondering if I would need to adjust the truss rod? How about if I went to 45-100 Chromes? I have never messed with my truss rod. I have a big necked p bass. I really like my action and I am afraid I might mess it up.

You'll probably need to adjust it no matter what; but don't worry because truss rod adjustments are very easy to do.

For what it's worth, I was wondering the same thing you are right now just yesterday and after doing some research settled on the 40-95 gauge set of Chromes. Their tension matched the medium size gauged set of roundwounds that I was looking into for comparisons. The 50-105 set had super high tension in comparison to rounds, and the 45-100 (which was what I was originally most interested in) still was a bit higher than rounds.

I can see some logic that if density and weight increases - for a given frequency; that there would be a greater tension. So if [a given string is] replaced by flats of the same size there might be an increase in density or if the string were increased in size (weigh and diameter) there would also need to be an increase in tension to achieve the same vibration frequency with a given initial driving level of energy (pluck or whatever). But that doesn't necessarily mean you need to adjust the truss-rod: try it an see; the difference might be minute.

I am thinking if I went 45-100 Chromes it would be a small change.

Again, the 40-95 set is the most like typical roundwound strings in regards to tension.

I would actually perfer a little more tension than what Ive got. I guess I am just a little nervous about removing the neck and adjusting the truss rod. I know its not a big deal I've just never done it.

Chromes don't differ much from standard rounds as far as tension. They do feel stiffer which would lead some to falsely believe they are high tension flats(which do exist).
