| tension in strings help!

hi, im quite new to bass, and ive been playing for a couple of months now.
i just bought some new strings and im not happy with them. the factory strings my bass came with had a good tension on them, but i tried to put new string on and there's to much slack in them for my liking.
ive grown use to playing with them with a good tension in them and was hoping someone can tell me how to restring without them being slack. hope this doesnt sound stupid...
i hope that makes sense, and i dont have any knowledge on the techniqual things of bass yet.
