Tension on Ti Super Alloys?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a fretless G and L L2500 and since it has such an aggresive tone, I put TI Flats on it, since I love them on my Fretted basses. However, the Flats on the Fretless just don't have enough sustain for what I am looking for. I have been considering TI Jazz Rounds or Ti Super Alloys. I am concered that the Super Alloys will have too much tension as I am now used to the TI Flat feel. Jazz Rounds look like they don't have enough tension. Can anyone comment on the Super Alloys as far as feel, and tone on their fretless?

I have the TI flats on my fretless L-2500 and they are working well for me. While I have not tried the SuperAlloys on my L-2500, I do have them on my fretted ASAT which has the same electronics as the 2500. So far, they are my favorite round-wound string. They are nice and lively but without being overly bright, and they have none of the harshness that some of steel round-wounds that I have tried.

I would think that they would give you more sustain than the flats but, again, I have only had them on a fretted G&L. Any given string will sustain more on a fretted instrument than on a fretless.

That being said, I think that it would be hard to find a better round-wound that works so nicely with G&L electronics.

Let us know what you end up getting.

I've got Super Alloys on my 55-01 fretted, tension is medium to low for roundwounds, somewhat more than TI Flats, but not uncomfortable. The sound is creamy, but with just enough edge. I like 'em quite a bit.
But, for something in between the TI Flats and TI SA, I switched from TI Flats to Ken Smith Compressors on my fretless, I tried Ken Smith Slick and did not like them, but the Compressors are great for me.

The SA's are wonderful rounds. Somewhat more polite than say Boomers or swing bass. A little lighter in feel. They'll require a bit of atension adjustment from the flat's I would guess. Not a lot though. Personally I really like the JF's for f'less. SA's are my round wound of choice fretted though. JR's were way too darned light for me.

Thansk for the tips y'all. I went ahead and ordered a set of Ti SA's last night from Bass Emporium (best price and the nicest guys!) I'll let everyone know what I think of them. The real test for me is how they sound in context with my band, which is pretty loud. I love the TI Flat's, but they didn't quite growl enough for me to hear it when playing with my band-solo they were pretty good, but how often do we bassists get to play solo anyway? Also, I like the idea of compressors, especially because they cost half as much as the SA's!
