Theoretical question regarding strings in general

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm envisioning a certain project and I was wondering how strings react when exposed to sound waves. Maybe someone here can answer this:

Imagine you have a sealed box. In the sealed box, you have a stretched string. There is a small speaker in the sealed box. Will the string vibrate only at its resonant frequency and corresponding overtone frequencies? Will it vibrate at all?

I'd say the string would vibrate when exposed to it's tuning & the overtone series.

Easy to try this: stick a stringed instrument in front of your cab, play away, & observe the "slaved" instrument.

ofsalesmen,
The strings will vibrate due to the sound waves impact.
However, the effect will be hard to identify....the string tension will require a significant amount of air pressure.
Think on the effect of a strong wind on a flag pole chord.
The vibration will be more significant when the input hits the resonant frequency.

Try this when tuning your bass: Play A on the E string and watch closely the A string.
If your bass is in tune, you will see the A string vibrating without any input other than the noise generated by the E string.
