Are there any strings that sound like Rotosound 66 Swing Bass strings?

Are there any strings that sound like Rotosound 66 Swing Bass strings, but are cheaper and/or longer lasting/better/etc? I think Rotosounds sound awesome, and I was just wondering if there are other strings that sound like them with that piano sound and high-output.

Have you tried DR Hi-Beams? If you are looking for a terrific "steel" tone, I can tell you that those are the best strings ever in my opinion.

Nope, I have never used them. I've read that they are very good though.

After I started using Roto 66s I tried several different kinds for a substitute that are either cheaper or last longer. I couldn't find anything close but the closest I got were the D'Addario XL Pro Steels.

Cheaper? The Rotos are like $22. How much cheaper do you need them to be?

Roto's have their own sound. I used 66's for years but with the way my hands sweat They never seemed to last for me. I switched to DR's awhile back and for me they last longer. I play the Nickle Lo-Riders, but if you want something closer to the 66's I agree go with the Hi-Beams.

+1 on DR HiBeams or FatBeams. They are essentially the same string, with FatBeams giving you a little more bottom end and a little fuller sound.

How about $18.78
Rotosound Swing Bass 66 - 4 String Set

How much cheaper can you get?

I haven't tried the DRs, but as I am cheap, I have been using Carvin strings for several years, and I'm very satisfied. I think they are repackaged Labella strings. I have used the nickel, and stainless. I like the stainless better, and I feel they compare easily with RotoSound, but @ $13 a set, they are far more affordable. Only downside, is having to get them in the mail, and pay shipping. I buy 3 or more sets at a time, due to the $10 minimum shipping charge.

I have also been tempted by the affordability of the Carvin strings. While I think they sound alright, they definitely do NOT sound like Rotos. In fact I find them even less aggressive than Blue Steels.

IIRC, Carvin strings are made by La Bella.

Yes, I know. They still do not sound like Rotos.

Rotosound 66: no close second so far, but i'm willing to try anyything

I've been on the same search and tried many brands including the DR Hibeams. Thought for a short time that the R. Cocco's were a close second but I was wrong. As stated by others, Roto's have their own sound and feel...and that is just a big part of what I'm after in playability and tone.

Qualifier: I dig strings that are rough on the fingers and fretboard...sort of comes with the territory (fingers without callous' beware)

Me too. Rotos are my favorite with Blue Steels running a semi-close second.

Nothing sounds like Rotosound strings... some are close but Rotosounds have a distinct ring to them that I can't seem to find in any other maker.

the DR strings are cool and Pro Steels are nice as well...

as a side note, some people HATE Rotosound and complain they shred their fingers.. Never had it happen to me even after almost 20 years of playing.
