are these Roto's?

I just bought a new bass that came with a set of strings which look like Roto's (ie red thread at the top and bottom), but they feel nowhere near as harsh as Roto's, plus it's day 3 and they're still sounding brand new.

Have Roto's improved drastically recently, or is there another company making similar looking strings with the Roto style red thread at the top and bottom? I usually use Hi-Beams but whatever these strings are on my new PJ, they sound amazing.

thanks man, the bass is a completely new find for me, i bought it in the Bass Gallery in London and was not aware they existed until recently. I'd been looking for a smaller bodied PJ and came across this bass, it sounds great and balances like a dream, I'm super happy with it. It's an Iceni Performer, hand made in Essex by a british luthier by the name of Mike Walsh. I believe they are no longer in production, which is a shame, this bass is pretty much perfect for my needs. Here's another pic:

They look like Rotos to me, if they are steel I would say they probably are.

It depends what you mean when you say have they changed recently as in how recently? I have been using them for a few years, and they have lasted better than anyone on here ever said they would. They also arent that rough after being used a while.

GHS didnt have silk at the bridge last time I used them, so I think we can rule out them.

Very nice bass by the way!

You can tell if you remove one of the strings and look at the silk end
if it has a rather zig zag shape covered in red silk that's a tell tale sign that it is a Rotosound

yep, there's a definate zig zag shape going on at the top - i guess it must be Rotosound! I have to say they sound great in the context of this bass, and I'm surprised I haven't killed them yet. (maybe I'm keeping my hands cleaner these days)

Thanks again for all the kind words about the bass, I didn't realise it would get any special attention. Maybe I should give it its' own thread over in Basses, I don't think there's an Iceni thread on TB yet.
