These SS Lo-Riders make my 55-02 sound too aggressive for what I play. Fix this. :)

So I put SS Lo-Riders on my Lakland 55-02 to cut through in a live rock context, and they do a great job at that. However, now the singer wants to record a very mellow folk rock project and to me the 55-02 is coming off way to aggressive sounding. What I want is defined, warm fatness.. but instead I'm snarling and grinding all over the place.

Time for some new strings!

My immediate instinct was the DR Sunbeams. Anyone have any other suggestions? I'd like to say away from flats for now (flatwound stiffness and clack = no thanks). I could try the Nickel Lo Riders, but I've heard the Sunbeams are warmer and more low-mid heavy still, which is what I want. I'm a little worried that the Sunbeam low B won't be usable in the higher registers.. but then again I have a 35" scale and I would probably get the 0.130 B. I should be good.

My ideal tone for this bass would be that of Jimmy Johnson, who I know plays GHS Boomers.. but I suspect he's one of these players that found a string they liked early in their career and stuck with it, rather than someone who's tried every string. Also I don't have a 10K+ Alembic Series II.

I find that the DR SS lo-riders if left on the bass and played for long periods will mellow out nicely but still retain good definition. It would take awhile though.
Sunbeams are very good. I've not had a 5 string set so can't comment on the B string. But they may fit the bill. I'm sure others will chime in and come up with good alternatives for you.
Jimmy Johnson does use Boomers and has used them for years and years. We have so many options today...back in the day....a bassist didn't have too many choices at all so he would pick something and just make it work for him.

The Sunbeams are much brighter than the Lo-Riders, so that may not be what you want. Sounds like you want ExtraLifes:

Lakland Nickel rounds are much more mellow than stainless. Alo, TI Flats if you don't mind flats.
