Thicker strings = More resonance?

Sign in to disble this ad
Questions in the title I only ask cos my Fender has 110s on it and sounds a hell of alot louder then my ATK which used to have the edge. I've put a Badass bridge on my Fender but it can't have made that much difference could it?

Also how much does string though increase resonance? Is it a noticeable amount because I'm temped to start doing it, but means I have to switch strings 'cos the ones I have aren't long enough which is a shame.

Ifit means changing strings, and you like the strings you're using, then the minuscule (possibly non-existent) increase in anything that you would gain would 100% definitely not be worth it.

As far as thicker strings.... they could have more resonance/volume... to a point. When they get too heavy it starts to become subtraction by addition, but that decline usually starts when you start going over .145

Some things you might be noticing;

A looser string makes the fundamental more pronounced and because it has the ability to move more freely, may actually be louder.

A tighter string may not be as loud when plucked or struck with the same force as a looser one because it won't move as much - BUT - you are free to have at it a bit harder to get that volume back. What the tighter string will give you is more upper harmonics. As such it can sound richer because there is actually more sound being produced, having the harmonics a looser string won't have as much of.

I canna speak to the second half of your question..... sorry.

I like the sound of thick strings and will probably switch my ATK over to them anyway but I was just kinda curious because my ATK was louder unplugged then pretty much any other bass I've come across and my Fender suddenly started getting the upper hand.

Love the feel of them too combined with a nice high action, makes it feel like playing a double bass and I like having to work to get notes (that and it stops me going off on one like I do all too often).

By the way, does anyone know what Rock Bottoms are like? The name implies they are good for rock but I have no idea, just wanna try something other then Ernies that have a bit of a following in the rock world for a deep tone with loads of mid clarity but not too much top end brightness.
