The Thickest Set of Strings

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to get the thickest set of strings possible. Where should I look to? I'm using D'Addario Flats right now, but they are of only average thickness. Is there a set of strings that goes thicker than the average?

La Bella Jamerson are the thickest E-G strings. I currently have something thicker on my '54 RI P: Rotosound Nylon TruBass Tapewounds. I have a 5-string set and have the B-D strings on, but have it tuned E-G.

I've got LaBella Deep Talking Bass Medium Flats on my 5 that are close to the Jamersons.

GHS Bass Boomers (Heavy): .050, .070, .095, .115 but they aren't flats.

Well, I tune my Peavey Cirrus F#BEAD.

I use SIT Conklin Signature strings
available here:
http://www.conklinguitars.com/accessories.html
or here:
http://www.bassguitarstrings.us/store/home.php?cat=361

Mine are the following gauges:
F# .165
B .135
E .110
A .80
D .55

They also sell a .195" string that is suitable for tuning down to C# (more than an octave below a standard electric bass guitar).

Obviously you don't have to tune the strings to the note they are intended... I think I remember someone saying they used the .195" for an F#.

The way I have the TruBasses on my bass: .075, .100, .115, .135

Both E-G, both flats.

No, I'm not kidding. And I think that makes mine thicker.

Was it hard to intonate the low E? I recently put a set of Jamersons on my '57 RI and it seems like the saddle won't go back far enough, the 12th fret keeps coming out slightly sharp.

It's a 2 saddle bridge, no problems with intonation that I can tell.

Damn.....

I'm a high tension guy, but that is some wild high cabling right there.

I'm starting to mess with some upright strings right now and can't wait to see what you do feels like.

It's tight enough to make a guitarist cry about hand pains after like 2 or 3 minutes.

My guitars never got touched for similar reasons - I had .012s and .013s on my high side and nobody much cared for it but me.

I like the way you think.

HAHA. Thanks. I had my guitar strung with 12 too, but electric and acoustic. The electric isn't like that at the moment, because I play heavy blues, meaning a lot of bending, and I'm no SRV.

The Ernie Ball Group I's are among the thickest I have found so far in flats. I haven't tried them yet, but I plan to very soon, I just need to find a suitable 5th string. I'm looking for something in the neighborhood of a .136

The gauges of the Group I set are: 55-75-90-110
