Thomastik-Infeld TI Jazz Flats: string through-body?

Sign in to disble this ad
I happen to have a spare five-string set of TI Jazz Flats (when was the last time you heard *that* one?), and am considering stringing my Yamaha with them. Thing is, it's through-body only, and I don't know how kindly the flats will take to the sharp bends that that entails. Also not sure if they're long enough for that; it's a 34" scale. Anyone have experience stringing these strings through-body? Bad idea?

Anyone? I'm looking for a "Sure, it works just fine, go for it" or "Don't be mad, man! Surely you don't want to snap that fine, expensive B string like a dry twig!"

Tanks,

I say go for it I have chromes through the body and the TI's are more flexible than those due to the round core. Youll be fine.

I used to run RotoSound Jazz Flats through a thru-body and I had no problems. Never strung it with Thomastik though

I just strung up a 4 string with them last, and as flexible as they are, it wont hurt a thing. My B string is a .132 and through the body for 3 months. No Problem.

Same here. No problems with TI's thru-body.

What kind of angle will the string make as it comes out of the body and heads up to the saddles? If that angle is really sharp, the core can crack on flats. That's what La Bella warns about. I had DR flats on my '51 Reissue P Bass, and that angle was so sharp, you could see the core where the windings separated.

Last year strung my 5string Ibanez ATK with D'Addario Chromes, mounting them through the body.

All string were fine, except for the B: i had problem of intonation, probably because of the sharp angle on the bridge.
Solved mountig only the B top-load

I have used TI Flats on three of my basses (all strung body-through) without any problems. You may have to keep an eye on the B string, but I'd imagine with the flexibility those sets have it shouldnt cause trouble.

I've often strung TI's through body, with no issue. Four string sets, though.

Quick question: On a 34" scale length, should the 35" scale strings be installed over the 34" when doing string-through? Need to buy some TIs and I'd rather not experiment since this will be the first I've run flats string-through. Thanks!
