Thomastik roundwounds

I was thinking of giving Thomastik roundwounds a try. I have been using Dr Highbeams for as long as i remember, but I'm starting to think that i should try something else too :-)

I have thomastik flats on my P and they are awesome.

Anyone try the roundwounds? They are somewhat lighter gauge than what im used to. How do they sound compared to the DR's

Strange strings. Very loose tension, very smooth feeling, VERY polite sounding, VERY expensive.

They remind me a bit of those rubber strings on those Ashbury basses. Not that they sound or feel like that, but just the 'strange' reaction I got when I played a couple basses strung with these..

I wouldn't bother myself... aren't they around $50 for a 4 string set discounted

I can't compare them to DRs, but I can say they are awesome strings. I used them for years on my Fender Roscoe Beck 5-string. Nice mellow tone, good feel and they lasted a long time. I mainly played blues and jazz with that bass...

In regards to KJung's post, I have to agree that you have to like low tension strings if you want to play TI rounds.

Ah...dont know guys. I play P basses and strung my classic P bass with the TI powerbass rounds and i dont think the tension is much less if at all different then say the 7150 fender pure nickels i had on her. The TIs have a very even sound and good punch in the mids. Fender 7150s are great TIs a bit better but for the price i cant say it was worth it in the long run.

The difference in opinion comes from the fact that TI Jazz Rounds and TI PowerBass are entirely different strings. Which was the OP asking about? KJung was obviously talking about the JR set.

The TI Super Alloys are working wonderfully for me on my G&L L2000. Low tension, but not as low as the Jazz Flats. I'm not sure how these would sound on another bass though..... they've tamed a few of the qualities of the L2000 that I wasn't fond of (with DR Loriders, the bass sounded boomy on the low end, and the high end sounded compressed).

Ok, I just saw TI roundwounds. If you are worried about low tension try the powerbass.

The jazz rounds, Powerbass and Superalloy are all very different - I'd suggest the Superalloy (like a mellow, great sounding Rotosound...but better).
