What genre of music do you play with your set, and what do you think they sound best with?

I play them with jazz, blues, and rock on a fretless. They probably sound 'best' on the busiest rock songs followed closely by the bouncy jazz tunes. Probably not ideal for metal as they aren't very bright or percussive in the way that I perceive metal players want. But really I like them with everything I do. I don't have quite the same percussive impact when slapping with them as I do with rounds, but once I get going I like it different then I did with the rounds.

I use flats for blues, blues-rock, motown and some jazz. One of my instruments has tapewounds on it, which gives it a kind of hybrid sound: flat-like but with a little zing.

I use it for mid 60s - early 70s type rock and roll.

Anything "old school"

I have flats on a fretted P-bass and a fretless Jazz.

P with flats nails the classic Motown vibe, as well as classic rock, jazz, and any sort of more mellow music like country. I also use this combo with a pick for a Robin Trower set my trio does, and I can get the perfect tone for that, i.e. very close to James Dewar's great work on the first two albums.

Ditto for Police tunes.

I have the same strings on the fretless Jazz (D'Addario heavy Chromes) and it sounds completely different. I use that for my Pino Paladino impersonation...as if!

I use em on both of my P basses playing new and old Country some classic southren rock and oldies.Love the dubby/full tone and feel. Since i use chromes I get good highs for flats if i lean on em or pluck hard....great for blues too.

Progressive, jazz, rock. Honestly, you can use any string for any genre of music. It has more to do with the individual playing the music than it does the strings.

I have a set of medium-gauge Chromes on my Ibanez GSR200. They sound really nice. I mostly play Contemporary Christian/Praise and Worship/Christian Rock and they do a pretty good job. I often tune DADG, because I like a lot of fat low end. These strings are best suited for that. I highly recommend them for any genre!

Flats

I've got them on around 12 of my 16 basses. Fender 9050's, N.O.S. Fender FT850s, Roto 77s, Pyramids, Maximas, T-Is, you name it. Used on 60s, 70s and 80s classic rock along with jingles and originals. On the few with rounds, Roto Swing Bass only.

Contemporary Christian rock, classic rock, old-school/Clash-era punk rock, whatever. Few outside of TB know whether you're playing flats, rounds or kazoo.

I play in a funky jazz trio (TI Jazz Flats).

I love the sound that Wilton Felder got on Jimmy Smith's "Root Down".

Anyone else dig that vibe?

I also play in the praise and worship team at my church.

Joe

Blues, country, and classic rock. I don't string any of my basses with rounds any more.
