Thumbs up Thumbs Up to DR!

I just received a set of DR Hi Beams for my Ibanez SR506. I went to my local shop last week to order them, and they came in Monday. Picked 'em up yesterday since I was fresh out of wisdom teeth removal on Monday.

I was expecting a 4 string set and then a seperate B and C, but to my suprise, they were all packed into one box, with a label saying 'Custom Hi Beam 6 Str.' How cool is it to be able to say "Well, my strings are custom?!"

The set is 130 100 80 60 40 30. Sadly, I got a 90 instead of 80 for my A, but upon stringing up and tuning, I found it to work just fine. Must be the roundcore thing.

I've only played about 15 or 20 minutes on them, but I'm already in love. not only is the price reasonable ($45), but the feel is great. I've used D'addario ProSteels and La Bella Hard Rockin' Steel, and the feel of the DR's blows them away. I was using the biggest B I could with D'addario, 135, but the 130 DR speaks 1000% more clearly. I had no troubles getting the untapered string into the bridge.

I don't have a bass amp right now, only an old Crate guitar combo, but I'm already liking the tone. Normally, I cut my mids slightly and boost the treble in order to pull out a hi-fi slap tone. Not with the DR's. I know they're still spankin' new, but they just sound good. Previously, I've only ever used sets 105 85 65 45, so I need to raise my action a bit, but they're perfectly intonated.

My action is crazy low. I like some fret noise and pop when I dig in pretty hard. They feel nice and smooth. Heck, I strung 'em up and tuned right to pitch, and they haven't even fallen out of tune. I'm going to order some Sunbeams for my T-40, and then maybe some nickel Lo-Riders for my fretless. Either way, I plan on trying all of the DR's I can until I find the ones that are perfect for me.

I am so going to get trounced for saying this, but DR strings are like Pokemon- gotta catch/try 'em all. I've tried DR Lo-Riders on my Warwick Corvette and though I love SIT Silencers, I still want to try DR Sunbeams because, well, DR makes an awesome string. The Lo-Riders grew on me and the DR "wow!" effect didn't happen right away, but it did.

I am a big fan of DR as well. I can't wait to try the new flats!
