TI Flats for a boutique neck-through 6?

Sign in to disble this ad
i am tempted to order a set of TI flats. how do these work an a neck-through 6string? mine is a neuser courage, 7piece neck, alder/maple body.

any accounts of similar setups? will the resulting sound drown in mud or will it be nice? i am really into a nice punchy, warm fingerstyle sound these days.

Hey Snowdan, thats a tough one. I actually do string TI flats through the body of my MIA jazz. They have a soft enough core that I haven't experienced breakage.

However, TI flats are very dead sounding, which is what I want, but may not be what you want for a boutique bass.

And finally, I don't think people realize how low tension TI flats are. I know you ERB types dig tight B strings. They will be nothing tight about any of the strings if you use TIs.

Again, I dig them for one of my jazzes, but I also set the action high in order to compensate for the string vibration.

Good luck,
Greg

Hi,i use TI flats on my 5 string stingray bass, and i agree that they are low tension, but they do sound very good, however i did use them on my MIA jazz bass with the string through body and they did start to come apart.

Bummer Cutty. Was it a specific string or more than one? This is the 3rd string through that I have had these same TIs on and they refuse to die!

He didn't say anything about "through-body" stringing. Just neck through

In which case, they would be fine. I don't think they're that low tension. About the same as DR Hi-Beams, or any other round-core string. I love low-tension myself and these strings feel perfect. They don't sound dead to me either. If you want a punchy, warm sound then these strings are it.

exactly. neck through. endless sustain, not too much attack. had a good growl with boomers, lacks definition now that the lo riders have aged.

i was just curious if the TIs would be too smooth sounding for such a bass. don't want a reggae exclusive bass...

I had 'em on a Tobias Basic 6, neck-thru, and it really improved the sound on that bass. Before, I never cared for the treble response. It was brittle, but after changing it muted that, and brought forward a punchy, beatiful jazzy tone, that cut in a musical way.
Hope that helps

Just my 0.1 € :-)

I used TI's for about 6 months on my neck-through FBB 6 (fretless, 7 piece neck, bocote/mahogony body, Barts) before finally switching them out for LaBella's. The slightly higher tension in the LaBella's gave the axe more punch and definition. I've always liked the TI's but have started to favor the LaBella's more ...
